Activity Options
Road Trip
Drive through Rocky Mountain National Park on Trail Ridge Road (to east entrance and back). We will divide up into available cars and carpool the excursion.
Trail Ridge Road is a spectacular scenic drive “on the top of the world” at 12,000 feet with numerous pull-outs for incredible viewing. Up and over to the East Entrance is about 50 miles round-trip. We will take a lunch and stop along the way to eat. Vehicle admission is $20 per car, but a lifetime pass is available at the gate for persons on disability (bring your social security card). If you already have a pass, please bring it.
Riders should offer a buck or two to their driver for gas. More info at: http://nps.gov/romo/planyourvisit/scenic-drives.htm
Elk
At various points along the road near the entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park, the elk perform their autumn mating rituals every evening before and after sunset. The bugling is an amazing pitch of screeches as the males strut their stuff to attract the females. What these guys won’t do for some hot action!
Rocky Mountain Repertory Theatre

"Nunsense"
Friday 7:30pm
Prepare for a laugh-out-loud, heavenly comedy with Nunsense, a musical conceived by Dan Goggin. Join the Little Sisters of Hoboken convent as they put on a talent show filled with hilarity, music, and delightful mischief! With uproarious humor and catchy tunes, this Off-Broadway sensation has received non-stop accolades since its premiere. A habit doesn’t always make the nun, as the sisters prove with their sinfully entertaining evening. Get ready for pure joy from curtain up to the final bow!
Mini Golf
Grand Lake has a new multi-tiered Mini-Golf course named "Meandering Moose". This new adventure has been a great addition.
Hiking
Group hike up the North Inlet Trail (adjacent to Shadowcliff property) or the East Inlet Trail (just down the road). Another option is the beautiful 4-mile one-way all downhill hike from above timberline into an adult forest. We use a carpool system to facilitate the one-way hike.
The hike is around 7 miles round trip and will take about 4-5 hours (which includes time for breaks, time at the cascades or falls, and lunch).
Bring a small back-pack for water and lunch, as well as comfortable hiking shoes and gear for changing weather. Note: The group will decide which trail once we are up there.
Off-road ATV Adventure
Spirit Lake Rentals offers ATVs including maps, helmets, and instructions. 2-hour rentals start at $189. Book by phone: Spirit Lake Rentals 970-627-0171.
Hot Springs
Soak in the springs at Hot Sulphur Springs Resort & Spa on the way home, about 40 minutes from Grand Lake.
Outdoor pools $17.50 (bring your own towel). More info: www.hotsulphursprings.com.
Bicycling
There are various trails and places to cycle (though probably not much that is mellow and easy).
If this is your thing, bring your own bicycle.
Fishing
There are various places to fish in Grand Lake. The streams are probably too fast and shallow in September.
You need to bring your own tackle and bait. Remember Colorado law requires a valid fishing license at all lakes and rivers.
Swimming
If you are totally out of your mind, you’ll put on your trunks and head to the public beach in town.
Grand Lake (aka Spirit Lake) is Colorado’s largest and deepest natural glacier-formed lake fed by cold mountain streams.
Shopping In Town
Grand Lake is a quaint and small touristy town without being overbearing. All the shops and restaurants are independently owned and operated. There are upscale clothing & art shops as well as more common places for t-shirts and postcards. There are 2 small grocery stores, a liquor store, a chocolate & sweets shop, several ice cream vendors, and a handful of restaurants and bars.
